The system of teaching helps people to progress taking account of their weaknesses and is recognised as educationally sound by education authorities in the UK. It is methodical and progressive, emphasising detailed correctness and absolute safety. Beginners work in a basic general way on simple postures according to their individual capabilities. They then progress to a more refined and detailed way of working as well as to more complex poses.

The Iyengar method has a large dedicated group of teachers and students in the UK. It has a strict examining method of teachers and there is a worldwide system of teacher certification, graded from introductory to advanced. In the UK the BKS Iyengar Yoga Teacher Association is responsible for awarding teaching certificates ensuring that standards are maintained.

The light on Yoga Association co-ordinates a network of centres, represents students, publishes two magazines each year and organises an annual convention, which aims to bring Iyengar yoga practitioners together. There are also Centres in many major Cities which offer daily classes and courses.
